We have been doing it wrong.
For decades, the standard approach to ADHD treatment has centered on behavior management, executive function coaching, and medication optimization. These are not bad tools — but they are being handed to people who are not yet ready to receive them. We are skipping a step. A critical one. And it is costing our clients years of their lives.
Here is what the research and clinical experience are telling us, if we are willing to listen: before any skill-building or behavioral intervention can take root, the shame has to be addressed first.
